NAGA Nashville Was Great!

Reaction MMA Enjoyed Solid Competition in Nashville

Many of us drove down that morning and some had gone the night before. It was a long day as competition went from 10AM until after 5PM with non-stop action, good sportsmanship, and maximum effort by all. Most of our team won most of their matches and some even won all of their matches. Standouts were Sirena winning first in gi and nogi and getting her first submission in competition and young 6 year-old Trent who won his first two katanas in gi and no gi, and 8 year old Coda who won katanas in gi and no gi making six katanas in two NAGAs. Coach Rob Nickerson was running around and was very busy coaching all of the matches. A few times, there were Reaction MMA team members on multiple mats at the same time. Since Wolf was still wearing a cast, he assisted in the coaching. The video below was shows some of the highlights of the event.

Why is Jiu-Jitsu So Important to Children?

Friday, March 23rd, 2012

Jiu-Jitsu is Vital Key to Hierarchy of Needs

JiujitsuHierarchy of Needs

Jiu-jitsu Hierarchy of Needs

Maslow’s hierarchy of needs is a theory in psychology, proposed by Abraham Maslow in his 1943 paper A Theory of Human Motivation and fully expressed in his 1954 book Motivation and Personality. Maslow used the terms Physiological, Safety, Belonging, Esteem, and Self-Actualization to describe the pattern of needs that human motivations generally move through. Maslow’s theory suggests that lower level needs must be met before the individual will strongly desire (or focus motivation upon) the higher level needs. With their physical needs relatively satisfied, the individual’s safety needs take precedence and dominate behavior. So many parents today fail to empower their children with the skills and ability to provide for their own physical security when they are outside or beyond the protection of adults. Without the ability to confidently and effectively provide their own physical security, children are often stressed by other children, often to the point of experiencing post-traumatic stress syndrome. Embarrassed or ashamed of their feelings of fear and inadequacy, these children almost never make their parents aware of the situation. By providing their children with quality instruction in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, parents can easily ensure that their child’s needs for a sense of physical security is met. Furthermore, the next two levels of needs can also be augmented via Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu classes. The camaraderie that develops between students and the “Sense of Team” that comes from competition add greatly to meet the needs of “Belonging”. Finally, via participating successfully in Jiu-Jitsu competitions, children are introduced to new levels of “Esteem” and “sense of self”. This entire concept is easily observed, just visit any kids Jiu-Jitsu class and speak with some of the children who have been in the program consistently for about six months or more. Evidence is also abundant at Jiu-Jitsu tournaments like those run by NAGA and Grappler’s Quest where you will see children beaming with self-esteem and admirable sportsmanship. Love your children, teach them Jiu-Jitsu and invest in taking them to competitions!

Water Balloon Fight after Kids Jiu-Jitsu

Friday, March 23rd, 2012

Reaction MMA Kids Jiu-Jitsu Class has some Fun

Several of the adults joined in as the Reaction MMA Kids Class had a planned water balloon fight after Thursday’s Class. The weather was especially warm and water balloons were flying everywhere in the Reaction parking lot as a great time was had by both young and old. This is such a great group of kids! Not only are they serious jiu-jitsu students who enjoy success in competition, but they are also kids who enjoy some good old-fashioned fun and would never back down from a good water balloon battle. Who knows what Coach Rob will cook up next, perhaps an airsoft war, maybe an XBOX lan party afternoon, but whatever it is, it will no doubt be something that all the kids, including those in their 20′s, will look forward to doing.
